I know a few of you are aware of recent events, but I feel like I need to explain why I haven’t been as “active” this week.
my sweet girl |
On Monday, I lost one of my favorite students, Ruby, to a 5 year battle with leukemia. You can read more about her here. My husband and I don’t have any children of our own. Like many of you, I love my students as though they were my own. The day she walked into my classroom, Ruby carved out her own special place in my heart.
I know her body is whole and that she is singing with Jesus, but my heart is so broken. I miss my girl. Please pray for her parents to find healing and comfort. Lift up the teachers and students at our school who are also grieving. Pray that we would all run to Jesus the way Ruby did.

Abby,
When my nephew was 2.5, he was diagnosed with ALL and fought it into remission. He started Kindergarten — on time — and was such a jokester, a light in each classroom he was in.
When he was eight, he was diagnosed again. I can't tell you how devastated we all were, but we were so comforted by the amazing care and support that came from his teachers and the school staff. He talked about his classmates and teachers constantly — and when he did finally pass away, so many of them came to honor his memory.
I share this story with you so that I can say as lucky as you were to have such a bright light in your life, Ruby was lucky to have you, too. Surely your love and tremendous care both as a teacher and a friend meant the world to her, and provided healing in a totally different way.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, your school family, and Ruby's family. Peace be with you.

Abby,
I went through a very similar situation also very recently. I had a student pass away about 10 days ago. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your class and school and Ruby's family.

I am so sorry. I have not had this experience and my heart goes out to both you and her family. She was very lucky to have such a caring teacher- and I am sure you feel just as blessed to have had such a sweet student. Long distance hugs.
