Do you have that “thing” that you put off teaching because you know it’s going to be hard?
When I taught 4th grade, it was simple machines. I HATE simple machines. Boring. Yuck. Blech.
When I came back to 3rd grade, it became subjects and predicates. So, I tried to find a way to make it easier for the kids. If I could make it easier for them, I could make it easier for me! ๐

I used to try and teach subjects and predicates at the same time. I kept banging my head against the wall! Finally, I tried teaching just subjects first. Once they mastered complete and simple subjects, I would move on to predicates.
Bazinga!
This is the 3rd version of these games I’ve created. I used 2 of them in my Wonderland of Subjects and Predicates Unit. I created these separately for those of you who might just be looking for a game to reinforce what you’re already doing.
Stay tuned – I have some printable freebies coming up!

Subjects and predicates is a tough one, for sure. I teach it the same way as you. Subjects first and then predicates. I find this is one of those grammar skills that needs to be practiced constantly in order for it to truly sink in. This game will certainly come in handy. The other toughy is possessives. Once you teach it, suddenly every word that ends in as "s" gets an apostrophe. Whether it's possessive or not! LOL!

I feel your simple machine pain. Our new science adoption started with simple machines this year. Ugh!
Your unit looks really cute. =)

The only thing that helped me understand subjects and predicates is the "Mr. Morton" song—from Schoolhouse Rock! Check it out! Mr. Morton is the subject of the sentence, and what the predicate says he does!

We LOVE Mr. Morton!! My kiddos especially love the part when the neighbor chases his kid. ๐
Abby says
Oooh girl. At least you get it over with early? ๐
Abby says
Absolutely!!!!

I think next year I'm going to have to start teaching it early. It's just so darn hard! ๐
You are totally right about the apostrophe. I taught contractions, plural nouns and then possessives. Talk about some confused babies!

I am still putting off teaching money to first graders….. ugh. Now that we're getting to the end of the year I think I actually have to do it now………. boo.
